Dancing with the Stars

I enjoy watching ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” with Sydney, age 5. Call me girly, but my daughter and I bond over the sequins and frilly dresses.

On Monday’s show, several of the women were wearing skimpy costumes, including  dancer Peta Murgatroyd. I decided to use the skimpy costume as a teaching moment.

“That dress is NOT for little girls or even teenagers,” I said. “Only big girls can wear a dress like that.”

“Oh,” Sydney replied thoughtfully.

Yay! I thought. She gets it.

“You mean young big girls,” Sydney clarified. “You’re too old.”

Hey!

Then I laughed, and she laughed.

I just hope she doesn’t wear a get-up like that to prom.

What have your kids said lately that put you in your place?

Dressed for Success

Last week I posted the following picture of my daughter:

It’s from the first day of school last September. When I look at it, I think 2 things:

1. Aww. She’s so cute.
2. Suri Cruise.

Yup, that’s right. I think about some celebrity’s 5-year-old child. And it’s not because of the stir little Suri created for wearing high heels while just a preschooler. Nor is it about her supposed over-age pacifier use.

I simply think about Suri Cruise because her famous parents have said she picks out her own clothes. And she looks fabulous!

I’m not sure I believe her parents, though. After all, you’ve seen the outfit above that my daughter selected for the first day of school. And here’s another ensemble she put together all by herself:

I’d like to think this is what it looks like when most 5-year-olds pick out their own clothes!

How’s the clothes situation going in your house these days?
