Earlier this summer I caught Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, and Rene Russo on Good Morning America talking about the 30th reunion of ‘Lethal Weapon’.
Remember Murtaugh and Riggs?
It got me thinking about other movies from 1987 that are worth revisiting, too.
Because little did I know it as a teenager back in 1987, but that year produced many memorable flicks that stand the test of time.
So in addition to Lethal Weapon, here are 10 more awesome movies to watch again that are 30 years old (yikes!):
1. Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Join Neal and Del as they try to 1) get along and 2) get home for Thanksgiving.
Remember this line? “Those aren’t pillows!”
2. The Princess Bride
I’ve shared my love of this movie about Princess Buttercup and Wesley before, but it bears repeating here. Plus, it’s fun to remember where we got this gem: “Luv. Twu Luv.”
3. Adventures in Babysitting
Elisabeth Shue is relatable and charming in the story of a night of babysitting that goes very wrong–in fun, family-friendly ways. This original that is waaaay better than the Disney Channel re-make.
4. Baby Boom
Baby Boom takes an entertaining look at being a working mother in the 80s. What’s surprising is just how much things haven’t changed in 30 years.
5. Dirty Dancing
Say it with me: Nobody puts Baby in a corner!
6. Overboard
This funny family film about amnesia (!) stars the lovable Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.
7. Mannequin
In this romantic comedy, an artist played by Andrew McCarthy falls in love with a mannequin, played by Kim Cattrall. It’s cheesy. But it’s a good cheesy, you know? Pass the cheddar.
8. Harry and the Hendersons
My daughter has adored this movie about a lovable Bigfoot since she was four. She still watches it yearly.
9. Can’t Buy Me Love
Patrick Dempsey (enough said!) is a nerd looking for love in this high school comedy.
10. 3 Men and a Baby
What’s not to like about Tom Selleck, Ted Danson and Steve Guttenberg as swinging 80’s bachelors caring for a baby? Their rad 80s outfits and totally tubular apartment decor alone are worth one more look.
There you have it, 11 awesome movies to watch again that are 30 years old. Are any of these your favorite? Which one do you want to watch again now?

The Princess Bride is such a big deal in our house that my oldest son, when he got married, had As You Wish engraved on his and his wife’s wedding bands.
Thanks for this great list!

Planes, Trains and Automobiles has been watched so many times in this household that we regret not being in line for royalties. It’s yet another John Hughes classic, ‘eh? It’s so sad that that great man has passed on and I treasure the movies he did make. I hesitate to share this but … while I’ve seen most of the flicks you list, I have never seen Lethal Weapon. Nope. Nada. I promise to correct that situation forthwith and will report back to you pronto. Thanks for the suggestion, Katy!

Hmm. I have to say if you didn’t enjoy Lethal Weapon in the 80s, then it might not strike a chord now as a first-timer. Unless you have a giant young Mel Gibson crush. Then you should watch.

my teen was watching Dirty Dancing last night. She’s watched Stand by Me about ten times this summer. She seems to have developed a new obsession with 80’s movies ever since I introduced her to The Outsiders #happynow
Katy says
Good job introducing her to The Outsiders, dad! I was pleased that they taught it in my son’s middle school so he had to read the book and watch the movie.

I really want to watch Overboard again, now. I think it’s okay to watch with my 10yo daughter. Did I hear they were remaking it? Yikes. I hope not!
