On Monday I dropped off my kids for their first day of summer camp. It’s a camp for school-age kids that’s run by the same daycare they attended as wee ones. They were so excited — and so was I. That’s because from my perspective, I love summer camp compared to school. Here’s why:
1.Time is flexible.
Slept in 5 minutes? Had a bad hair day? You don’t have to worry about missing the bus – there is no bus! Plus, no one at summer camp cares if you show up at 8:45 vs. 8:30 am.
Summer camp has the same devil-may-care attitude in the afternoon, too! If you’re stuck in traffic on the drive home for 5, even 10 {gasp} minutes, summer camp will NOT call social services. Or pass judgment.
Ahhhhh….
2. No homework
Duh!
Let me say that again.
Duh.
And let me also say that no homework for the kids means no homework for this mom. Nothing to double check. Nothing to sign. Nothing to put in the right pocket in the right folder on the right day.
Ahhhhh….
3. I’m sending my kids off to have fun every day.
They play. They eat. They go on awesome field trips. They play.
Ahhhhh….
4. They can go to camp dirty and hungry.
I don’t care if they go to camp in the clothes they slept in. Or show up with Lucky Charms stuck to their face from breakfast. Seriously. And what if they got more Lucky Charms stuck to their face then in their bellies? No problem! My summer camp serves breakfast AND 2 snacks! Those kids are taken care of.
All I have to do is remember to pack them a lunch.
Which I can do.
I promise.
I can remember that.
I think.
Ooo, look! Lucky Charms!
What about you? Do you enjoy summer camp vs. school?

Yes! Here’s to the lucky charms of summer! we are now beyond the delights of day camp in this house and I do miss that. Good to read that somebody else appreciates the freedom day camp brings … oh and of course that your KIDS do too!

Oh, Kelly, your comment reminded me that I’ll be asking advice this summer from my friends like you who have older kids! My oldest goes to middle school in the fall and I’m. Freaking. Out. There will be much more adventures in parenting coming my way that I’m totally unprepared for than letting them eat Lucky Charms – yikes.

That’s exciting Katy! I won’t be sending my kiddo to summer camp until NEXT summer but I was already looking up some of what they offer. And yes I’m super excited. They have some pretty cool field trips and activities. So far though since he’s just going into pre-K, he’s still into play mode. Although I do like how his preschool builds in some academic curriculum too — he already knows how to read and do math! Yes, this is one nerdy mom 😉

They really learn through playing at the pre-K level! Heck, I wish I could learn and work through playing nowadays. 🙂

I am 100% with you!! Summer Camp is 100 times better than school from a mom’s point of view! My kids are both at sleep away camp for the next month, so summer camp is REALLY winning out in my mind right now!! –Lisa

I have to tell you…my boys have worn the same clothes to school twice and one kid even wore two different shoes. I do like summer camp, especially when they go the same week. 🙂 I might be beyond those days though. I have one working full time, another working part time and one that decided not to go to any camps this summer.

Ah, Michelle I like to hear about your kids as it gives me a little hint of what’s to come. Because of my kids’ ages, I rely on summer camp so I can work. I’ll definitely be interested in learning when I feel comfortable enough and at what age they will be to leave in charge of themselves. I’m sure it’ll be here before I know it.

Camps are fun and mostly easier to handle than school. My kids go to a different camp every week because that’s how it works for us. That makes some of the transportation tricky on certain days, but I still prefer it to homework and missing the bus. Of course, by the end of August, I’ll be craving routine again!
