I was driving the kids home yesterday from day care/after school care. Will, 7, spoke up and told me there are 3 reasons why he really doesn’t like me:
1. You never really let me do anything.
2. You never let me ride my bike anywhere.
3. You won’t change my bedtime from 8:30 even though you stay up until 10:30.
Wow. How’s that?
Sydney, 4, spoke up and told me there were 6 reasons why she loves me. I think she managed to list two reasons, which were that she loved me and that I play with her.
But Will’s words really stung. And he was acting cranky when we got home. So I gave him a big hug and asked him if he had a bad day at school. He started crying and said yes. Suddenly it was okay that he didn’t like me. At least I could hug him. And, after all, if I had a bad day, I might not like me either.
