This weekend my friend Isabel took pity on me and the kids and invited us over for dinner. Chad was out of town, so this invitation was a treat.
I hadn’t offered to bring anything when she asked me, because I honestly didn’t know if I had the time or wherewithal to make a trip to the grocery store with 2 kids in tow.
But the kids and I had made Valentine’s Day cookies and we had plenty to share. So I brought a plate of pink frosted cookies with sprinkles and M&M’s. Problem solved, right? I’m a nice dinner guest, right?
Wrong! I made Isabel’s kids cry because they have allergies and I totally forgot! They got to look at the brightly festooned cookies, but not eat them! I even suggested they pick off the M&M’s and eat just those. The near 4-year-old informed me, “M&M’s are made in a plant that processes peanuts, so we can’t have those.” Er, sorry!!
These weekends when Chad goes out of town and I’m all by myself with the kids I think I’ll just lock myself in the bathroom, throw some Cheerios on the floor, hide the matches, turn on Nickelodeon and call it a weekend. I’m clearly too brain dead to function properly and now I’ve foisted my bad parenting skills on another family!
