Bedtime Conversations with My Kids

June 27, 2013 By Katy 17 Comments

IMG_4127One of our favorite bedtime routines is a quick snuggle before lights out. We’re talking a one-minute snuggle. We’ve been doing this so long that even my big, cool 9-year-old doesn’t protest that it’s embarrassing.

I had the following conversations with my kids during a quick snuggle. These conversations made me laugh and scratch my head and pretty much solidified that I hope to snuggle with them until they go to college (because they are honest during this time! That is precious in parenting!)

First up was Sydney, age 6. We were talking about what her name would have been if she was a boy.

“If you were a boy, you would have been named Dean,” I told her.

“Dean?” she asked loudly. “Then I wouldn’t have any friends!”

My apologies to any friendless people named Dean out there.

Then there was Will, age 9. He was meowing during our snuggle.

“Why are you acting like a cat?” I asked.

“Meow!”

“No, seriously, that is weird.”

“Meow!”

“How do you have friends? Do you act like this at summer camp?”

“No, I save all my weirdness for home.”

Ooo. Lucky me!

What funny things have your kids said lately?

Cute stories!! I can’t think of anything right off the bat, but once when my oldest was little he asked me about all the squirrels that were carrying nuts back and forth and I explained to him they were getting ready for the winter. He thought about it for a second and then said “that’s cause they don’t have a pantry like us, right?!”

Kids are so smart! I love how they see things. No pantry, indeed.

Yesterday Henry did something funny that reminded me of myself, so I loudly exclaimed, “That’s my boy!” Then Benjamin got very mad/jealous and yelled, “Henry not your boy!! I your boy! Henry is Daddy’s boy!!”

Too funny! Guess I should be lucky Madison doesn’t speak as yet and the boys speak a little too much. Yesterday while helping Madison who’s 17 months play with her mega blocks, my 8 year old said. If only she was a boy she would have been so much cooler. I guess girls aren’t cool. 🙂

That’s so cool! Brady somehow came up with “Talking stories” that we do after lights out. I tell him 3 stories, either from my childhood, my family, something from that day, pets I’ve had, old friends of his when he was little, a trip we took, things we’ve done together, anything I can think of. He loves it. I hope he always wants me to tell him stories and as he gets older, maybe I can get him to tell me stories too 🙂

Our best conversations are usually in the car. I keep the radio off and see what my son comes up with. It’s usually a gem 🙂

I love to record convos with my kids, too! Yesterday my 6 year old told me, “I’m glad I picked you for a mom.” 😉
