Boys will be boys, even in Haiti

March 1, 2013 By Katy 10 Comments

One of the best parts of my trip to Haiti last week was meeting Agustin. Agustin is 9 years old and in the 4th grade. My family has been sponsoring his schooling through Haiti Outreach Ministries for a year and a half. After morning songs last Wednesday, the Principal called Agustin to her office to meet me.

School kids meet in the courtyard to sing songs before classes begin.

He had such a sweet nature and a handsome smile. I gave him some small gifts–a t-shirt, pack of gum, Oreos, tootbrush, and some bouncy balls. We took a picture.

Then, he was off to class.

To my delight, I got to assist in his classroom later that day. I was supposed to help the English teacher play Bingo with the class.

Everyone but Agustin and a handful of his friends (all boys) pulled out their pens or pencils. Agustin and friends started looking wildly around, pretending to be shocked they had no writing utensils. I should also mention that Agustin and his pen-less friends sat in the front of the class,  {ahem}, probably on purpose, right?!

I gave him a pen and let him keep it. Let’s hope he hung on to it throughout the day!

The next day after morning songs, which take place in an open courtyard, I see Agustin get signaled out by the principal. His shoes are too dirty and he is sent to the outdoor faucet to clean them off.

All of this endeared him to me even more.

Why? Because forgetting a pencil and having sloppy shoes would be something my son would do. And even though my son and Agustin are world’s apart, they are the same. And God loves them both very much.

Pen or no pen!

This is such a great story and its so true that those things mean so much and we take them for granted. I just love that you got to meet Augustin.
