I appreciate the brave souls who, after reading my lunch post the other day, reached out to me and assured me that I am not the only one who does not send their kids to school with cranberry sauce and brie on cinnamon bread for lunch. (That sandwich concoction was suggested in September’s Parenting magazine.)
Today, I want to further highlight my brown bag skills by sharing the following:
1. I sent each kid to school today with a Lunchable. Thanks Oscar Meyer!
2. I overheard a conversation between Will, 9, and Sydney, 5, regarding the elementary school cafeteria. Big brother was trying to help his little sister, a new kindergartener, overcome her fear of buying lunch in the cafeteria.
“Sydney, their chicken nuggets are soooo good.”
“And, they have hot dogs.”
“And ketchup,” he continued.
“Ketchup,” he reiterated seriously.
“Ketchup!”
Yes, that’s right, folks, the biggest selling points for the school cafeteria are chicken nuggets, hot dogs and ketchup. I’m feeling pretty good about myself today knowing that my school’s cafeteria missed the memo about cranberry sauce and brie sammies, too!

I am with you on the cranberry sauce and brie sammies! What a waste that would be since most kid dump half of what you pack for them for lunch anyway! I worked the lunch room for a little while in the 1980’s (back when the dinosaurs roamed) and I was amazed at how much “good for you” food our children dump in the garbage. One child had a dozen gummy bears laid out for lunch and I asked him where he lunch was…he pointed at the gummy bears and said “right there”. I was floored and wondered where the parent was in this situation….but I guarantee it was this kid’s choice and not his Mom! Tell Will to keep up the good work with Sydney and soon enough she will be a lunchroom specialist!

Yes, I will keep encouraging Will to be a good big brother! Gummy bears, huh!

My Eliana (also a new kindergartener) wanted to get hot lunch today. It put me in a panic. I made sure she didn’t pick up on this, but today’s lunch is grilled cheese and tomato soup, something that she loves. BUT, all I could do was imagine her accidentally dumping the tray and wearingg the soup. SOUP FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!! So I dressed her in clothes that I don’t care too much about and am hoping that if she does spill it, she isn’t too damaged with embarassment. If she is, I’ll be packing her lunches until she’s 18.
On a side note, I’ve never packed brie and cranberry sandwiches either (I have done turkey and pesto though, Aiden went through a phase where it was all he’d eat. Now he’s on a more normal kid lunch of Almond butter and jelly… naturally, he can’t just eat peanut butter like every other kid).

I can totally understand why Sydney is scared to buy lunch. The crowds, the noise, the choices, the swipe card thingy! If she doesn’t give it a go soon, I’ll be stopping by one day to walk her (and me) through it.
And, I’ve had Almond butter and it’s delish. Your Aiden has good taste!

Personally, I’m thrilled that my child asked for (and GOT) a peanut butter and jelly sandwich every day for three solid months. Said child requested (and GOT) an identical sandwich for breakfast for the same three months.
They look forward to ChicFilA day and Pizza day at school. Who am I to argue?

Wow…I can see MAYBE that kind of sandwich in a high schooler’s lunch…maybe. I know my kiddo wouldn’t go for that. Nuggets and KETCHUP win every time. And Spaghetti-O’s…but those are at home 🙂
