You win some and you lose some, right?
Yesterday I took Will to a Martin Luther King, Jr. symposium at the University of Michigan. He didn’t want to go. He didn’t know anybody and he kept telling me he wanted to stay home and play. However, in the real world many mommies have to work on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Plus, it would be good for him. So off to the symposium he went.
I prayed about him and worried about him off and on all day while I was at work. When I picked him up, he had a glazed look on his face.
Uh oh, I thought.
But when he saw me, he ran up to me and gave me a big hug. Smiling, he told me, “I had fun today, Mom!”
My heart relaxed!
Then we went to pick up Sydney, 4, at her daycare, which miraculously was open on Martin Luther King, Jr. day.
As I came into her classroom, I noticed all the other kids and the teachers were wearing pajamas. Except Sydney.
“Wait, was it pajama day and I didn’t know it?”
Yes.
“Wait, where was the memo that told me it was pajama day?”
The teacher pointed to a little itty bitty note written in the corner of 1 of the 10 message boards strewn across the classroom. “And I tried to tell everyone on Friday before they left,” she commented. Well, we don’t come to daycare on Friday, so I missed that reminder!
“I just feel bad she missed pajama day,” I commented.
“Oh, there were about 3 kids who didn’t remember,” said the teacher.
Great, 3 out of 20. That makes me feel better!
“She’s going to need therapy because I forgot pajama day,” I whined. The teacher tried to soothe me, but I was inconsolable. I later apologized to Sydney.
And then I did what any other Bad Mom would do.
I sent her to school in her pajamas today!
