How to Make Gift Tags Out of Christmas Cards

December 7, 2024 By Katy Leave a Comment

Today I’m showing you a quick, fun DIY project that will spruce up your holiday season. Plus, I’ve got an announcment about my story in the Chicken Soup for the Soul: Tales of Christmas book.

Lets’ start with how easy it is to make cute, festive gift tags out of Christmas cards. (If I can do this project, then trust me, so can you!)

First, you need Christmas cards you no longer want to display or hang onto.

Here’s my batch of Christmas cards from last year, in the basket I used to display them during December.

I make my gift tags from the Christmas cards in early January when I’m cleaning up from the season. I know others, though, who save cards from year to year and make their gift tags during the holiday season aka NOW.

Whatever works!

Second, pick out the cards with the merriest pictures for gift tags. (Clearly you won’t be picking out any pictures of families on those photo cards! That would be weird!). Then round up a pair of scissors and a hole punch.

I’m so low-key crafty that my hole punch is a three-hole punch for 8 1/2 x 11 inch papers. I don’t have a single hole punch, but obviously that’s a better choice, so use that if you have one.

But Imma say it again: whatever works!

The next step is important: check the BACK of the pictures to make sure there’s no heartfelt sentiment or scandalous gossip written from the sender of the card.

It’s best if it’s plain like this one below.

Then cut around each picture. I do this freehand, but others like the people on this crafty site use rulers and fancy stuff to make a more traditional looking tag.

Make sure you leave space at the top of your tag to punch a hole.

You need a hole through which to thread ribbon so you can tie the tag on to your gift.

Now, admire what you have just created–beautiful uprecycled gift tags ready to top off your holiday gifts.

Next, here is my announcement about my story, “How a Combine Harvester Saved Our Christmas Tree”, appearing in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Tales of Christmas (available on Amazon or at your favorite local book store.)

My story has been featured on “The Chicken Soup for the Soul Podcast with Amy Newmark”! This podcast it is available free, with three new episodes each week. My story is in the December 6 episode titled “Holiday Miracles Abound During the Season.”

You can listen on Megaphone, the platform that hosts the podcast: https://playlist.megaphone.fm?e=ADL4028857744. Or you can find it on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Happy Holidays, happy listening, and happy crafting!
