My husband and son both LOVE hockey. They can spout statistics about their favorite players and teams the way I can spout the lyrics to the Scooby Doo theme song.
A few weeks ago we attended a local hockey game. During the first intermission, my son, Will, 8, got to scrimmage on the ice with his hockey team, coached by none other than my husband. It was a fun, sweet moment to see them both out there!
After changing into his regular clothes, Will returned to his seat for all of 30 seconds before realizing he was dying of thirst and hunger. So we took him to the snack bar.
Lo and behold, we saw the legendary Red Berenson in the eating area. For those of you thinking, “Who’s Red Berenson?” let me just tell you he’s a legendary NHL player and head coach of the legendary (in my humble opinion) University of Michigan hockey team.
Coach Berenson was happily posing with Will’s teammates for photos. My husband nudged Will to go get his picture taken with the Coach.
Will acted shy.
I nudged him to go get his picture taken with the hockey legend.
Will mumbled something and stood his ground.
I leaned in closer and asked him why he didn’t want to go over and get his picture taken with the legendary Coach Berenson.
“I want a snack,” was all he said. And he stayed in line for the snack bar.
Yup, that’s about right!
Snacks – 1, Legendary hockey coach – 0!

Awww… Hopefully he doesn’t regret choosing his snack over meeting a hockey legend, some day. I have to say that you are brave mommy for letting your boy play hockey. Hockey and football both freak me out! I’m DREADING when my boys are old enough to decide what sports they want to particpate in. I’ll be rooting for something in the non-contact category because I’m a whimpy mom. Of course, my husband played football, so, I’m sure I will not get my way. 🙁

I love the way you take everyday instances and relate them while applying a sense of humor and relating it all to The Topic at Hand – ;-}
