The movie Bird Box was released on Netflix just before Christmas and the internet exploded over it.
I admit I was surprised. At this time of year, most people are embracing sweet, dorky Christmas movies on Hallmark.
But an end of the world thriller starring a woman?
Being a Sandra Bullock fan, I checked it out. I found the movie intense and a bit anxiety-provoking, but well-done. It’s not really my cup of tea story-wise (too much killing and stress), yet as I reflected on it, I came up with lots of reasons why Bird Box is amazing.
- I love that Sandra Bullock is pregnant in this movie. Not because of what it adds to the story (it adds a lot), but because of what it means in the real world. Sandra Bullock is in her 50s. Finally, a movie showcased a woman acting younger than her age.
- And a woman in her 50s is THE LEAD in a Hollywood movie. Woot, woot!
- I appreciate that Sandra Bullock produced this movie and it was directed by another woman, Susanne Bier.
- Her character, Malorie, was just as smart and strong as the men in the movie.
- Plus Malorie had to escape the baddies, fight the baddies, and survive not just by herself, but with two kids. It honestly made me think of real-life superwoman Sacagawea who survived everything Lewis and Clark survived, but with her baby strapped to her back.
- Oh, and she did all that while blindfolded. Geesh.
- I like that Sandra’s character was mean to her kids. At one point in the story, one of her kids wanders away because she thinks Mallorie is mean to her. Hello! Malorie is only mean because she’s trying to save you and protect you. Can any other moms out there relate? Heck, yes!
So, I think Bird Box is pretty cool in a lot of ways, even if the storyline is a bit tense.
Did you see Bird Box? Did you like it? Can you think of other movies you like because a mother figure kicks butt? Aliens with Sigourney Weaver comes to my mind.

I couldn’t agree with you more, I really enjoyed the movie, although I did feel like the story line finished abruptly.. But, hell yes, love the part where you mention she was hard on her kids,!

Right?! I agree about the ending–I kept thinking she should have been a bit more distraught or numb, but she was quick to be happy. The end.

I loved this movie! Don’t usually watch R rated movies, but this one was super good!

Yes! Not my usual cup o tea, but very well done. Also scary. 🙂

Ok, so I was going to give BB a miss. Saw the trailer and while I adore Sandra I thought nah, not for me. I’ll be ducking for cover every time a seagull flies overhead. So. Now, you’ve got me thinking I’ve been wrong. Dang. I’ll add it to the watch list.

I had to watch it in 3 sittings! Good luck!

I keep hearing mixed reviews about Bird Box. I don’t have Netflix so that’s one reason I haven’t caved in to watching it yet. I probably will at some point just to see what the hype is about.

I wouldn’t go out of my way to watch it, then, since you don’t have Netflix. But maybe in the future, if you get the chance, check it out–if you like suspense. It is creepy!

Y’know I didn’t even think of that! You’re right, it is nice to see a strong woman, who isn’t the young Hollywood it girl do a big meme-worthy movie , and who PRODUCED it too!!
I’m still not sure if I’ll watch it, but for you’ve almost made me feel like I should to support Sandra.

Right? It’s nice to see an “older” woman succeed–and kick butt–in Hollywood.

Thank you Katy – you have whet my appetite to investigate this movie further. Of course, I’ve heard the hype but I guess it made me recoil a little as to what it may be about. Having read your post, I see there are several things at play here and that there is merit in taking a look in order to be able to look for some of the things you mention, for myself. I have to confess to being a little nervous around the subject matter but that is based on my assumptions on what it’s all about. I think I’m going to give it a go having read this. Thanks for bringing it up on #tweensteensbeyond and I hope that you are enjoying the start of 2019.

And there is no shame in watching it in 3 different sittings as I did, because you are scared. Or don’t even finish it, too. Your life will still be complete. 🙂

This one has passed me by Katy which is surprising as I am a hardcore Netflix fan but not so much with horror – will have to check it out and see whether I dare to brave it out! I love Sandra Bullock so it would be interesting to see her in this kind of role. Thanks for sharing with us. #TweensTeensBeyond

Thanks for this Katy. I’m always on the look out for new things to watch on Netflix and this is definitely worth a try. Love that it’s got a woman in her fifties as the leading role too. Thanks so much for sharing with us at #TweensTeensBeyond
