My Pet Peeve

October 10, 2014 By Katy 11 Comments

My Pet PeeveHave you visited GameStop before? It’s a video game store mostly staffed by people who have not seen the sun in several years.

Every now and then my tween gets a GameStop gift card so we shop there. On one such occasion, the clerk asked if we were in the rewards program.

I didn’t know, but I gave him my phone number.

Typity-type-type he went into his computer.

“Kathy?” he asked, reading the screen.

“It’s Katy,” I replied.

Blank look.

“Like Katy Perry,” I finished.

“I don’t know who that is,” replied the clerk.

I looked at his name tag.

It read “Montana”.

So I had just had my name butchered by a man whose name was Montana?

However, my new bestie Montana is not the only one to assume I’m Kathy. For whatever reason, I’m called Kathy quite often. Remarkably, I was never called Kathy when I was little. It’s only since I’ve been an adult.

In fact, being called Kathy* is my pet peeve.

It’s not like my name is Edelweiss or Agustin. It’s Katy. Yes, it’s the less popular spelling of the name, but again, it’s not like my name is something difficult like Hermione or Siobhan.

It’s Katy.

There. I got that off my chest.

I’m also really peeved by people who swing wide to turn right while driving. What’s that all about?

What’s your pet peeve?

* No offense to people named Kathy. Kathy is a great name, it’s just not my name!

Haha! My name is Jennifer and I usually go by Jen, but I don’t like it when smarmy sales people or others I meet for the first time after introducing myself as Jennifer say, “So Jen”…. annoys the crap out of me. It’s like being introduced to a Matthew and calling him Matty!

P.S. My kids all threw up inside of a GameStop at the same time once. I got them back for you.

Seems like names are a problem for all of us! In my case, when I’m introduced by my last name, like Ms. Lau, some inspired people think I’m Laura, being Lau my nickname! Why would someone do that? Using Jen’s example, would someone be introduced as Mr. Matty? Hahaha!

That “Matty” comment from Jen is still making me smile! I don’t know why people think Lau is your nickname for Laura? It’s probably the same people who see my name and call me Kathy. 🙂

I hate it when people call me “Ma’am.” Makes me feel old.

My pet peeve is not replacing the toilet roll! (And yes I’m particular about which direction it unrolls.).

If you added about nine more, you could have done the pet peeve Tuesday Ten link up!!! Too funny!!!

    One question-

Do you spell your name correctly all the time? Perhaps you throw that H in there and throw everyone off…

    Just a thought.

    Tee hee…

I love the way you spell you name- btw. It’s the COOL WAY. 🙂
