It feels like only 10 minutes ago that we wrapped up another school year and switched gears for summer camp. Yet, here we are, officially knee deep in summer!
As Ferris Beuller so eloquently puts it, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around for a while, you could miss it.” So I’m stopping now to look around at our summer thus far. Here’s what we’ve been loving:
A camper cabin over Fourth of July weekend
As my husband and I age, we are less inclined to enjoy tent camping. Therefore, we booked a camper cabin for the Fourth of July weekend about 90 minutes from our house. We fished, we swam, we kayaked, we chilled in a hammock. And it was good. The best part was not having to pitch a tent, pump up an air mattress and then disassemble the tent and deflate the air mattress!
Getting a pedicure from my daughter
I’ve taken my daughter, 8, to get a couple pedicures in the last year, but sometimes that adds up or takes a precious afternoon. So when our feet were feeling scraggly this summer and we couldn’t be bothered driving to the salon, she and I took turns giving each other pedicures. So fun — and sparkly!
Ziplining
I forked over $20 so my kids could ride a zipline for 6 seconds. They loved it! That made me happy, albeit poor. But hey, it’s not every day you can ride a zipline.
Camps
Besides the day-to-day summer camp my kids attend while my husband and I are at work, we have watched them enjoy a few special camps, too. My son, 12, went to Boy Scout camp for a week in June. He told us there was a lot of walking and tons of fishing, one of his favorite activities. We were completely out of contact with him for the week, which was a growing experience for all of us.
He also attending an ice hockey camp and stayed in a college dorm. Check out the following text message exchange with him just one day after I had moved him into his dorm room:
We didn’t forget my daughter, either. She enjoyed a local gymnastics camp – and then promptly had me enroll her in weekly gymnastics classes. (So much for my Dream Crusher abilities where I tell it like it is and try to dissuade her from gymnastics!)
An Anniversary Concert
My husband and I went to see Bryan Adams in celebration of our 21st wedding anniversary. Bryan Adams is my favorite rocker and my husband is my favorite husband. Win-win!
We’ve still got a full month of summer left to go, too. I can’t wait to spend a week “Up North” as they say here in Michigan at a cabin on a lake near Traverse City. Wineries, cherries, water, sand dunes…ah!
Enough about me and my summer. What fabulous things have you been up to this summer? Who would you go see in concert if you could? What has been your kids’ favorite kind of summer camp? Please share!

My kids have had an awesome summer with all kinds of camps going on. I think my daughter’s favorite was Space Camp, while my son’s would probably be the overnight soccer camp he went to. We haven’t done much else because of work and the weekends fill up so fast!

The weekends DO fill up so fast! I’m dreading the countdown of those weekends until school starts now. I want to have 10 more, not 5 more.

So nice to hear about all the fun stuff you have been up to this summer! Camper camping sounds like it’s up my alley, as I’m not one for tent sleeping. My oldest is away at overnight camp for the second part of the summer for the first time. It’s four weeks with no contact besides letters and scanned emails. I miss him terribly, but he’s having fun and for that I’m so grateful. I wanted to go to the Grateful Dead concert this summer, but in spite of my best efforts to make it work, never happened. Glad you got to rock out with your hubby! : )

I just read your post about your son away at camp and can totally relate! He’ll be home soon. I know I was glad when my son returned from just 1 week away. I do think it’s a little preparation of sorts for them growing up and moving out {sigh!}.
