Last weekend we had Will’s 8th birthday party. It was a lot of fun (plus some work–who hears me?!)
I had remembered a lot in planning the bash, including:
Book the venue
Pay deposit
Make reasonable-sized guest list (that’s code for affordable-size guest list!)
Invite guests
Prep goody bags
Fret about RSVPS (or lack of…how am I supposed to give a head count when people don’t tell me if they are coming?)
Remember cake cutter, candles, lighter
I kept thinking to myself I had 24-hours before the big part-o to order the cake. So we showed up at our local Dairy Queen the day before the party.
Except they require 48-hours for custom cakes. Sigh.
Good news was that Will now got to pick a cake from the freezer and there were plenty to chose from. Of course, half were birthday cakes and half were Father’s Day cakes, since this was last weekend.
Will chose a fishing cake! It had a big bass jumping out of the lake and lots of plastic fish placed on the side. Clearly this was a Father’s Day cake.
But the lovely girls at Dairy Queen slapped “Happy Birthday Will” on the top in orange icing and we were good to go. To my son’s 8th birthday party with a faux-birthday cake with fish all over it. And he couldn’t have been happier!

Too funny. Too bad it wasn't 1/2 off…
