I think all kids are scared of the basement for one reason or the other. Mine are no exception.
One day this week Sydney wanted to retrieve a balloon from the basement. She begged me to come with her. I conceded and tried to get away with going halfway down the stairs, waiting for her to quickly get her balloon and come back up. She would have none of that!
“Get your butt down here now!” she said, hands on hips.
“That’s not how you talk to me,” I replied calmly. I was so proud of myself for not rewarding her rudeness.
A sliver of air escaped her clamped lips. I swear she narrowed her eyes. Hands still on her hips, she said, “Get your butt down here now, please!”
That’s a much better way to talk to me, right?!
