Valentine’s Day as the mother of a teenager is weird. This is because the following random Valentine’s Day thoughts swirl through my head:
I wonder if my son likes anyone?
Or if anyone likes my son?
Oh, who cares. Why is that important? He’s a wonderful person and shouldn’t worry about Valentine’s Day at his age.
Oh, remember when he was little? They used to exchange those paper Valentine’s? That was so cute.
Wait, no it wasn’t. It was a pain in the butt because mostly I had to write all those suckers out.
Why do all those little paper Valentines come with candy nowadays anyway? Isn’t there an obesity epidemic? We didn’t have candy with our Valentines when I was in elementary school.
Mmm. Candy.
I wonder if there will be any candy grams to buy at the high school.
I did that that one year and sent it to a boy I had a crush on. It was stupid. I don’t think he ever knew it was from me and I was too scared to announce it was from me.
I wonder if my son will buy a candy gram?
Or if he’ll get a candy gram?
Mmm. Candy.
Oh, who cares. Why am I thinking about this?
Should I get my teenager something for Valentine’s Day? No, he’s not my Valentine, for goodness sake.
Speaking of my Valentine, what should I get my husband? Beer. Beer’s good.
I hope my teen isn’t drinking beer.
Or looking at porn.
Or doing drugs.
Dear God, why am I thinking about these things?
I hope my son has a happy Valentine’s Day.
And I wonder if he likes anyone?
Or if anyone likes him?
I would love to know that I’m not the only mother of a teenager having these random Valentine’s Day thoughts. I respect your silence, though, should you be banned from talking about your teen online.
Would these random Valentine’s Day thoughts be different if my teen was a girl? Stay tuned for a few years when my daughter enters high school!

I dread them getting to that age. I fear I will have to relive the teenage angst all over again! #globalblogging

I’m telling you with my boy at least it’s not nearly as bad as I thought. But my daughter is 11 and there are already signs that her angst will be spectacular. 🙂

Psssst … I’m thinking the very same … yes, the very same questions … and my lad is 22. I do apologize if this causes you to continue to lose sleep. Tell ya what. Let’s just each go out and buy candy and beer. And gift it to ourselves. We’re bound to get a good night’s sleep then. The Happiest of Valentine’s to you! And isn’t it blissful to no longer have to organize the class Valentine’s card handout? I always left it to the last minute and we ended up with the unfortunate no-one-else-wanted-them cards. Yes, my kids were the ones handing out “Granny loves you” to their classmates …

Oh, Kelly, I laughed at the Granny Loves You card selection. And I was dismayed shopping this past weekend for Valentines to realize that NONE of them were candy-free at the store I visited. NONE. They all had candy. I guess that makes the kids happy, but I survived a candy-free, foldable tear-out Valentine card existence.
Does the fact that you weren’t worrying about your daughter mean she’s got a Valentine this year?! Hmm. 🙂

Well, two of my sons are married, so I know they’ve got their work cut out for them on Valentine’s Day. My college aged son is very cynical about the nature of these “Hallmark Holidays,” so he will ignore the day. Our high school teen will be thankful and excited to get a treat from us, and I doubt if he will give two hoots about any of the event markers he encounters at school.
Having no daughters, I will have to wait a long time before my baby granddaughter is a teen in order to research that element of the holiday, but I’m with you in thinking it might be very different!

I wonder if your married sons were part of the large group of males I saw in the card aisle at the store last night?! I’ve never seen so many men willingly in the supermarket. 🙂

My boys are 6 and 10. They still do the paper valentines for their whole class and teacher. We make them write them out. That was this evening 1/2 hour activity. I hope they get a Valentine hand written by another kid. I hope they bring home candy, too.
Katy says
If it only took your kids 1/2 hour, good on you! It never seemed to be that short for us. Here’s wishing you the good kind of candy is brought home that you can sneak a bite from while the kids are asleep.

I looked at my eldest today (aged 7) and suddenly panicked that he may be rejected. He is so sensitive that I dread him trying to find someone to love. Thanks for linking up with #globalblogging

Beer’s good. Yes. Now that I’m thinking if my son is getting exclusive with his Valentine date. He asked a girl out and it seems they hit it off. He’s spending more time on his phone and smiles (grins) often. Oh boy! Why do they grow up so fast.? But it warms my heart to see him happy.
