Like many of you, I have HOURS of free time to shop and a rockin’ body that clothes just DIE to hang on.
Bwa ha ha! Oh, sometimes I crack myself up.
In reality, I’m just a regular person, above average in height, with 2 kids, a husband, a job outside the home, and limited time to shop for myself. Thus, as I heard about Stitch Fix both online and from real-life friends in the last year, I was intrigued.
What is Stitch Fix?
Stitch Fix is an online personal styling service. After filling out a style profile that includes your sizes, preferences, likes and dislikes, a stylist hand picks 5 items for you to try in the comfort of your own home. Keep what you love, send back what you don’t (shipping is free). There is a $20 styling fee that is charged whether or not you keep any pieces, but if you do keep anything, the $20 is credited towards its cost.
So how did I like it?
For my first fix, I received the:
- Lark Cinch Waist Jacket
- Cordelia Striped Boat Neck Sweater
- Trinity Waffle Knit Sweater Tunic
- Colibri Heart Print Tab-Sleeve Blouse
- Denna Colored Skinny Jean
Here are my initial thoughts:
- Totally cute box that they came in!
- Why did they send me skinny jeans? I specifically filled out my style profile with “NO SKINNY ANYTHING”.
- Why did they send me GREEN skinny jeans? I specifically indicated that I didn’t want anything green on my style profile.
- Ooo, fun style card with ways I can wear the pieces!
- I really wish they’d sent me a necklace or earrings to try.
- Let’s try this stuff on!
Boat Neck Sweater
The boat neck sweater was cute, but not necessarily anything I haven’t seen in stores. Unfortunately, it had a flaw in the neck where a piece of yarn ended and another began. This chunk was sitting for everyone to see on my collar bone. As soon as I saw that imperfection, it was game over for the sweater.
Decision: Sent back
Waffle Knit Sweater Tunic
Not bad, but not great. It was slightly unflattering where it hit me on the widest part of my body (my hips). The deal-breaker was that it was too short on my arms.
Decision: Sent back
Skinny Jeans & Cinch Waist Jacket
The jeans were better than I thought, but still a skinny jean. And as a woman sensitive about her thighs, I hate skinny jeans! Plus, remember how I told my stylist NO SKINNY ANYTHING?
I liked the jacket. Just not necessarily $88 worth of liked it. And the color in which it came, putty or stone, is not my most flattering color. I asked my husband about 8 times if I should keep it. Finally, I decided that I would KNOW if I wanted to keep it.
Decision for skinny jeans and jacket: Sent back
Heart Print Tab-Sleeve Blouse
I’m going to save you the suspense: I liked this blouse and kept it! It’s a color I normally wear and enjoy, I thought it felt comfortable and looked good, the heart print was fun, and I don’t have any other blouses like this.
So now that you know I kept only 1 of 5 pieces, you’re wondering if you should try Stitch Fix?
Yes! It was fun. It was relatively easy. I tried on things I normally wouldn’t try. For next time, I’ve started pinning things I like to a Pinterest board in hopes that I can better guide my stylist.
And if they send me skinny jeans again, maybe we’ll part ways. Or maybe I’ll just laugh.
I wasn’t compensated for this review. I’m just sharing my experience. If you haven’t tried Stitch Fix, though, I’d love it if you click through from my site as I’ll be given a $25 referral credit. Thank you!
Have you tried Stitch Fix yet? Any big hits or misses?
Rabia @TheLiebers says
I’ve never tried it, but I’ve heard a lot about it. I don’t really like shopping all that much because, as a short woman, nothing ever seems to fit correctly. I would like to have someone else pick things out for me. Maybe I’ll give this a try sometime. What’s the average price per piece?

Katy @ Experienced Bad Mom says
Rabia, you can indicate your preferred price range on you style preference: 0-$50 and $50-100 were my choices! The blouse I kept was $48, the sweaters were around $60-70 and the jacket was $88. I can’t remember the jeans because I was laughing too hard that they sent me skinny jeans. The way I looked at it, it was likd buying something full price at Target or Macy’s vs. waiting for it to go on sale. 🙂
If you keep all 5 pieces, they give you 25% off the whole shipment.

I’ve had three fixes. In general, I’ve liked the service. They’ve selected fun pieces I haven’t seen in stores, and it’s added some different styles to my wardrobe. I think it’s a fun treat for every once in awhile, but I’ll stick to some of my traditional stores to get my basics. Love the heart top!

I will try it again when we thaw out in Michigan (I refuse to buy more sweaters! Eventually, spring will come!), but it will be more for fun than anything else. I agree it’s sort of a treat vs. something I would rely on for my everyday clothing needs.

I can newly participate in Stitch Fix due to my “lifestyle change” (read: diet), so I eagerly read your review of it. I think I’m going to give it a try!
Katy @ Experienced Bad Mom says
It’s fun! Why not? Worst case you have a fond memory of trying on something crazy like skinny jeans and you’re out $20.
Woo hoo on your lifestyle change!

Ok so where have I been? I read your post then thought – huh, bet they don’t offer this in Canada. Googled it and first thing to pop up? Stitch Fix Canada. Who knew? Love the idea of this – I’m shorter than short and so unless I shop where they sell decent – read good looking and flattering – petite sizes I’m hooped. And – I love the heart blouse. Looks super on you.

I, for one, think they should do a better job of marking petite sections in the stores. I can’t tell you how many times I’m browsing a rack, thinking how nice a blouse looks, when I look up and everyone around me is 1) a foot shorter than me and 2) confused as to why my 5’11” frame is standing in the petite section!

Oh my gosh, Katy, you look great in those skinny jeans. Your long legs are perfect for them. Too bad you don’t like them, but I completely understand. when you don’t like something, you just don’t like something and no amount of compliments can make you like them.
Katy says
Thanks, Mikey!

I might be out if they sent me a pair of skinny jeans, I detest those1 More because of a claustrophobia issue I am working on overcoming…. I had no idea about Stitch Fix, but it sounds fun as long as we avoid those jeans 🙂

I heard from other friends IRL that Stitch Fix LOVES skinny jeans and is obsessed with sending them. We’ll see when I get my next fix!
Katie @ Pick Any Two says
I’ve heard so many good things about Stitch Fix, and now I REALLY want to give it a try. I love that they send the style cards to help you figure out how to mix and match the pieces. By the way, I personally think you look great in skinny jeans!

Katie, even though I didn’t keep all 5 pieces, I kept the style card of inspiration! Thanks for the compliment, too. 🙂

That top with the hearts is cute! I’ve been wanting to try it, but just haven’t taken the time to do it.

The most time consuming part was the style profile. But it was more fun than not fun. I also didn’t realize you can pick your arrival date. I liked that a lot as I knew what days are better than others for having time after school and work to turn into a fashionista. 🙂

I really like the heart top too. Very cute. I’m a new fan to your blog 🙂

I have contenplated Stitch Fix on several occasions, but I just can’t seem to pull the trigger. I think it would be fun, but honestly, I don’t usually spend that much on clothes so the prices do turn me off a little. I love the heart blouse that you ended up keeping though! Super cute and fun! Found your blog on the BloggyMoms link party. I really appreciated your honesty on your Stitch Fix review!

I appreciate this honest review, Katy. I’ve completed the profile for Stitch Fix but I never pulled the trigger. I actually like to shop, and I’m thinking that I could get a better deal on clothes than what they offer. But I do like the idea of someone else picking out things for me to try that I wouldn’t normally wear. I’m still on the fence, but if I do it I will let you know!
