I was reminded of the Ides of March recently when we were planning my son’s course schedule for his sophomore year.
While discussing his English class choices for next year, I brought up Shakespeare.
“You’ve had to read Shakespeare, right?” I asked him.
“Only Romeo and Juliet,” he replied. “Well, we watched the movie.”
“Did you read it?”
“We read parts of it. Then we watched the movie.”
Okaaay.
So in honor of all things Shakespeare and the ides of March, and because you can’t watch the movie of my life, here’s what’s been going on around here lately.
Settling in with the rat
You may or may not have heard that my daughter got a pet rat. The cat only tolerates him, but the rat thinks the cat is his new best friend.
He’s very cute, but somewhat naughty. He chewed up his $15 Etsy rat cube on the first day. Hmph.
But, I did not punish him too severely. In fact, I let him watch Ratatouille.
Farewell Hockey
The 2017-18 ice hockey season has wrapped up for our family. It was a long, fun season that started back in September.
Having kids who play hockey is kinda like having little kids. In both situations you ask yourself, “Will it ever end? Will I ever get my life back?”
Then, when it’s over, you miss it!
Big Heads Prevail
Build A Head sent me some free Big Heads to play with. They do make us laugh.
I wanted to wave them around at my kids during hockey playoffs, but they forbade me. Meanwhile every team they played during playoffs had Big Heads.
Girl Scout cookies
I don’t know why I mention this because the 7 boxes we bought only lasted a day. A day.
I’m kidding.
Sort of.
What’s next
I’ve got a busy 2 months at work coming up, a trip to Disney over spring break, my son starts lacrosse, and my daughter wants to play recreational soccer just to run around and have fun.
I admire that.
She didn’t want to sign up for year-round travel ice hockey because she’s 11, smart, and wanted a break. Did we just screw her chance of playing in the 2026 Olympics? Probably. But run free, little girl, run free!
That’s our Ides of March update. What’s happening in your neck of the woods?

Headed there on Friday! Can’t wait. We’ve never been on Spring Break before, though, so I’m anxious how we will all respond to the crowds.

You’ve reminded me of our hamster Hammie (I know) who chewed her (his) way out of the cardboard box on the way home from the store. Now that was a fun car ride, let me tell you …
Just back from a quick trip to Chicago to help my niece promote her new line of dress clips at a Bridal Show. I’m so proud of her – she’s bringing back a product that hasn’t been available since the 50’s! So cool. Off to Erma in two weeks and am sorry you won’t be there, too. However, let’s be roomies for 2020. OK?
Have a wonderful, memory-making time at Disney.

Well now those bridal clips sound cool! You must share on Insta or the blog.
And please write about Hammie.
You know me, Kelly. I’ll be making memories, aka yelling at the crowds, all through Disney World. Send peaceful thoughts.
See you in 2020.

The relationship between your rat and cat is hysterical – what a fabulous photo that is! We’ve had a busy March with quite a bit of school work, plenty of netball and some concerts. Looking forward to our Easter break. Thanks so much for joining us at #TweensTeensBeyond Oh and as a sidenote – my daughter got an A in GCSE English Literature without ever reading the set texts!! Make of that what you will!

Oh, I tried netball once in Australia. As a regular basketball player, I couldn’t quite adjust to all it’s odd rules and lack of beating each other up. As I’m 5’11”, my Aussie roommates were a bit saddened for sure!

I ordered Big Heads for my sons’ graduation party. The way they cut the outline of Adam’s head made it look like the shape of Frankenstein….which only made it so much funnier.
Someday, oh someday, I’ll get to go to Disney.
That picture of the cat and rat melted my heart.

Oh I love those heads!! And a fond farewell to the Hockey for you until next season. I bet you are pleased! Sounds like a busy March and more to follow. Thanks for sharing with #tweensteensbeyond

I love the Big Heads and I could think of a lot of ways to use them! Tape next to my kids’ beds to scare them when they wake up, put one in my husband’s car to scare him when he goes to work… pretty much anywhere these things could scare the crap out of someone.
