I made it! I successfully navigated both Kindergarten and 4th grade this year. And passed!
That’s right, forget my own advancement from Kindergarten and 4th grade oh-so-many years ago. It really only counts when you participate in your child’s advancement from said grade.
Let’s see. This year in Kindergarten I sharpened my listening skills, towed the line and followed lots of directions, colored, and successfully (well, most of the time) completed 6 worksheets each week for homework.
In 4th grade, I navigated the tricky world of Everyday Mathematics, coerced 30 minutes of reading every night, signed the reading log every morning, and gained infinite knowledge about “wall ball” played at recess.
But the thing I’m most proud of is making a William Hull costume.
Ever heard of William Hull?
Me. Neither.
Just last month my 4th grader came home with his “living wax museum” assignment. All 4th graders had to pick a figure from Michigan history, research the person, memorize a 2-3 minute speech about the person, and then perform the speech while dressed in character. And the costume was part of the grade.
My son wanted Stevie Yzerman from the Detroit Red Wings, but (surprise, surprise!) the teacher’s son picked him first. So my son picked William Hull because they share the same first name.
Turns out he was a revolutionary war hero who became Governor of the Michigan Territory before surrendering Detroit to the British in the War of 1812.
WAKE UP.
So my 4th grader I had to make a costume for a revolutionary war hero who became Governor of the Michigan Territory before surrendering Detroit to the British in the War of 1812.
SERIOUSLY. WAKE UP!
Long story short, after much Googling, I put my son in his white baseball pants, a white button down shirt, his dad’s navy blue sport coat, and a fabulous wig made with cotton balls, a glue gun, and an old baseball cap.
I was soooo proud when I got an A!
What was your proudest achievement this school year?
Andrea says
Ingenious! Love the cotton ball wig idea! You get an A+ from me.

Thanks, Andrea!

Not sure if I had one, just happy that we made it through, and added a third child in the middle of it all.

so funny! I think you did a great job on that costume! My kids are all grown…my daughter is a teacher, so one thing I learned this year is that when school is over, the teacher needs a LONG vacation.
