Thirteen Things I Love About My Thirteen Year Old

July 12, 2016 By Katy 18 Comments

My oldest turns 13 this month. Happy birthday to my boy!

In honor of this joyful and momentous occasion, here are the thirteen things I love about my thirteen year old.Thirteen things I love about my thirteen year old!

    1. He is kind to his sister more often then he is a butthead to his sister.
    2. He loves cats, video games, fishing, and ice hockey. He doesn’t care who thinks any of those things might not be “cool”.
    3. He has a great sense of humor. Check out this screen shot of a recent exchange we had via text:I love my thirteen year old's sense of humor!
    4. He tells me he loves me.
    5. He tells me I’m a good mom. (Sniff!)
    6. He is still shorter than me at 5’5″ so I can pretend he is still my baby.
    7. He is a sports SUPER FAN. You want to be sitting next to this kid at any major sporting event, trust me. He cheers with his whole heart, feels every ounce of the victory or defeat, and desperately wants to appear on the Jumbotron so much dancing and hilarity are displayed.
    8. He is thoughtful. Here’s an example. He waited 51 weeks after getting his first cell phone to break it AND it was within days of his father and I setting him up with a newer, better phone for his 13th birthday. How considerate, right?13 Things I Love about my thirteen year old oh the joy of broken cell phones!
    9. He is social and friendly. He makes friends happily and puts everyone at ease.
    10. He’s my son and I love him.

Happy birthday to my thirteen year old! Do you remember being thirteen? Was it a good year or an awkward year? Do you have any advice for my son–or me–as we enter the teen years?

Oh man that was a pretty thorough phone smash! I guess job well done? 🙂

Your kiddo sounds like a pretty good egg. I hope he has a great birthday!

The phone smash story seems pretty funny, too – something about it being in his pocket while he was riding a tricycle (!) and playing dodgeball when his pocket got hit by a ball and the phone was crushed into the trike. Good times.

What a beautiful tribute to your son, the birthday boy. No doubt his spirit of self-confidence and the love of his family will carry him through the challenges of the teen years.

We went out for the first time last night with it. Fun! Although I admit since I never played Pokemon before I was kinda like “huh?”

What a funny, delightful guy, Katy. That pretzel shot is CLASSIC. I love it.
You know, I’ll wager you’ll be treated to just the odd hiccough now and then as he skates through the teen years. If he’s not bothered about folks not thinking he’s cool, now, well, I’d say that’ll stay with him and guide him as he ages.
And please tell him that from where I’m standing, he’s TALL.

I’ll pass on the tip about how he really IS tall compared to you. He may wonder who you are and why he should care, but I’ll enlighten him!

Awww my oldest is 13 too.
Love that pretzel picture he texted you! And also, my teenager is still just a hair shorter than me. I’m clinging to that as long as possible.

Right? I can still hug him like he’s a kid. I think it’ll be awkward when he’s 6’2″!

Happy birthday to your 13 year old! I think him and Cass would be great friends, if we lived close. He is such a great kid, and I love that he is comfortable with WHO he is and what he likes to do. It’s clear you’re doing a great job mama!

I think he would be friends with Cass, too. One of his good “mates” here, as our English friend likes to say, is a girl. They are talking about getting an apartment together when they are adults because they are friends and they both like cats! Sounds good to me.
