Happy Valentine’s Day! Or, as my son Will pronounces it, Happy Valentime’s Day!
His first grade teacher recently sent home instructions about Valentine’s Day. Every kid gets a card, if you buy candy, read the labels for allergies, etc.
BUT – the note also declared “Please have your child write out the Valentine’s. It means more when it comes from the kids!”
Who does it mean more to? Her? The kids? Like a 6-year-old is going to toss aside a Valentine that is clearly penned by a grown-up? I don’t think so.
Sometimes I have limited time. And Will always hates handwriting. So the thought of having him write 22 Valentine’s almost put me over the edge.
Luckily, I had my wits about me the day I made him write Valentine’s. I let him write out 22 cards with a Sharpie permanent marker, which is normally taboo. Writing with permanent ink gave him a little thrill and he successfully finished them all. And I guess I officially made it into the good moms club that lives inside the brain of Will’s first grade teacher.
If I was really smart (and sassy) I would have had him write his Valentine to his teacher only. Then, in 1 minute flat I could have written the kids’ Valentines. His teacher would never know, right?!

Sharpies make the world a better place. I know I always love the work I have to do more when I can complete it with a Sharpie! Now that's a boy who thinks just like I do. Way to go, good mom! đŸ™‚
