Why ‘Let It Go’ from Frozen Should Win an Academy Award

February 27, 2014 By Katy 9 Comments

The 86th Academy Awards will be held this Sunday. Will you be watching?

I haven’t watched the Academy Awards in their entirety since 1999. That’s the year that they voted “American Beauty” the Best Picture. I thought that movie was terrible, so I parted ways with the Oscars.

That said, I do love to check out the gowns on the Red Carpet and I usually flip to the Academy Awards a few times during the night.

This year, if I had any pull, or any wish at all, it would be this:
‘Let It Go’ should win the Oscar for Best Original Song.

If you have kids, then you know why.  If you have a daughter in particular, then you definitely know why. Heck, if you’re a woman and you breathe, then you know why!

I’ve never seen a song capture hearts the way ‘Let It Go’ has. My seven-year-old daughter has spent hours watching the YouTube video and learning the words. We saw Frozen twice and the second time she sang her heart out in the theater. I hear her singing ‘Let It Go’ while she plays around the house, oblivious that anyone is watching or listening. She tells me that she and her friends sing it at school and help each other learn the words. I LOVE ‘Let It Go’ and I’m in my forties! Good Morning America hosted an epic, live sing-a-long to ‘Let It Go’ just yesterday, not to mention the tons of YouTube covers of the song. I know I’m not the only one mesmerized by ‘Let It Go’!

ID-100230070-2‘Let It Go’ makes the movie magical. It makes singing, dreaming, and believing magical. And I hope that it is awarded for anchoring such as great movie.

Now I know that the Academy Awards is as political as the next awards show. I’m not naive. I know that U2 is up for the award in the same category. I can see whoever votes for the Academy Awards thinking it’s “cool” or politically correct to vote for U2. I have nothing against U2 and I even attended opening night of their 1987 Joshua Tree world tour (true, that!). But I highly doubt that their song has transformed and touched as many hearts as ‘Let It Go’.

So my  vote for Best Original Song? Let It Go.

Letitgo2Are you going to watch the Academy Awards? Any strong feelings about who should win this year?

All of the 4-9 year old BOYS AND GIRLS in my oncology crafts group request this song/video at work and just sing their hearts out. I mean, you’ve never seen such FEELING!! And the art therapist and I are singing right along with them:)

I’ve tried singing along–because it’s AWESOME–and Sydney usually shhh-es me so just she can sing!

I don’t watch the Oscars, but I agree that song should win an award. When you have women 30+ all over the place singing along, that should be a major hint!

I know! Most of my friends have heard it, can sing it, and like it.

I see a huge liking for this song in kids. In fact, last night I was in the nursery with the 2 and 3 year olds and some of them were talking about it. I really have not sat down and listened to it fully.

I totally, obviously, agree with you! I LOVE this song – and I love that my kids love this song, It was so nice to see a wholesome musical come to market this year – and I especially loved the story line of Frozen. It didn’t culminate with Prince Charming saving the day, but rather sisters learning the message to stick together. Girl Power!

There’s no question that this song will win hands down. It makes me a little sad that many people didn’t even know who Idina Menzel was before this movie came out… but she has done so much in the musical theatre world. I’m guessing that a lot of “Frozen” fans never even realized that the person who is singing “Let It Go” is the same person who starred on Broadway in shows like Rent, Wicked, Aida… She will be in a new musical this year called “If/Then”, and I really hope that all her exposure through “Frozen” brings out an entirely new audience who has never experienced LIVE musical theatre before. While movies are good, nothing beats the power of experiencing live theatre! If all this “Frozen” craze introduces people to the world of Broadway and musical theatre, that would be my dream. 🙂

I agree! I love musical theater and only wish we had it more consistently here in the Detroit area. We get the touring companies come thru, but usually just a for a week. Thanks for coming by.

One of the best Disney songs EVER!! I’m afraid the song from the Nelson Mandela movie will win, but I really think Let It Go deserves to win. It’s definitely been the “people’s choice” out of all the songs nominated. Fingers are crossed!
