This week I’m talking about celebrity moms of tweens and teens who should blog. Why?
Because as the mom of a tween and a teen I need some advice. Or just plain entertainment. Maybe commiseration.
Or all of the above.
Yup, as a mom whose kids are not little, but not yet in college or the real world, I’ve noticed a dearth of voices* that speak to my stage of life. Either everything shouts, “Millennial Mom, here’s how to potty train!” or else “Kids going to college? Here’s what to buy for your kid’s college dorm room.”
Eh.
So let me give you my wish list of celebrity moms, who happen to have tweens and teens, that I wish had blogs. That way I could lurk, read, get lost in, and be encouraged by their joys and triumphs of raising tweens and teens.
Brook Shields, mom to Rowan, 14, and Grier, 11
I love Brooke’s turn as the redneck neighbor Rita Glausner on ABC’s The Middle. She must have a good sense of humor and I wonder how that translates to parenting two girls.
Plus, her girls have red hair just like my kids. And she has Laz-y-Boy furniture just like me. We’re both tall, too. In sum, we should be best friends.
Hey, Brooke! Call me.
Katie Holmes, mom to Suri, 11
Of course I want all the deets on Scientology and Tom Cruise, plus her rumored beau, Jamie Foxx. But really all I want to really know is does Suri shop at Justice? Play with American Girl dolls? Does she struggle with girl drama, too? Spill, Katie, spill!
Victoria Beckham, mom to Brooklyn, 18, Romeo, 15, Cruz, 12, and Harper, 6
I would read Victoria’s blog for the fashion advice alone. Although I’m not exactly petite like her. Or fashionable.
But I would enjoy her perspective as she watches her teens date, use social media, take honors classes (or not), make their high school teams (or not), and just generally deal with puberty. Do your kids have mood swings, Victoria?
Candace Cameron Bure, mom to Natasha, 19, Lev, 17, and Maksim, 15
Actually, Candace DOES have a blog, but she’s so busy being an actress, author, mom and wife that it hasn’t been updated since last year. That’s okay. I see her on TV and social media a lot and I admire how she lives her faith and shares it. Plus, she makes divine Hallmark Christmas movies. She’s a hockey mom, too.
But how does all that help her when someone’s mean to her kid? Or her teen rolls his eyes and says she’s stupid? Or when she refuses to let them get SnapChat? Let me know, Candace!
Reese Witherspoon, mom to Ava, 18, Deacon, 13, and Tennessee, 4
I figure the actress who plays the lovable Elle Woods in Legally Blonde has to be fun in real life, too. Right? She seems to be co-parenting with her ex in a responsible way. But what does she really think about her teens’ dating life? How did she survive driver’s ed? How many college visits did she go on so far?
Moms of tweens and teens, see what I mean? It would be a fabulous source of camaraderie and commiseration if these celebrity moms of tweens and teens would open up and share their stories about raising young adults.
What famous mom would you like to see blog about raising kids, teens or otherwise?
*a notable exception to the lack of tween and teen motherhood voices is Your Teen Magazine for Parents, where I recently published two pieces on my fourteen-year-old. There’s also the #tweensteensbeyond linky hosted by After the Playground, Not Just the 3 of Us, and Mother of Teenagers. If you’d like more camaraderie as the mom of a tween or teen, come join the linky which goes live every Tuesday. They’re British so they blog with a cool accent, too. I’m kidding.

Jen, you are showing your age with your letter campaign — and I love it! We should get our kids to make YouTube video campaigns or huge IG campaigns I think is how the young folks do it these days. 🙂

You darling! Thank you for the mention. And can I just say Blue Lagoon???!!! Anyone else here if the age to remember this. Beautiful Brooke. I feel pleased to know four out of your five celebrities (as in heard of and not ‘know know’). Great post and they would all be welcome here at #tweensteensbeyond would they!?

Oh Katy 😀 I loved your bio alone so much that I immediately followed you on Pinterest! And the post did more than its fair share of justice to your sense of humour. Psst! I want to know more about Reese too. She’s my favourite from that list above!

That was an interesting list. I would want to hear more from Katie and Reese as well but I wonder if they have the same struggles as we do. And you are right about there being a lot of writing about toddlers or young children but not much about teens. As a mom to a teen and a tween, I love to read teen tales if nothing else then for commiseration. Enjoyed your post, Katy.

Ah thanks so much for the shout out Katy, we’re thrilled that you mentioned us. I think I may have a bit of a Welsh accent but you’d have to ask Jo and Nicky because it’s hard to detect your own isn’t it?! I need fashion tips from Victoria Beckham to be sure!! Thanks so much for joining us at #TweensTeensBeyond
Katy says
I will always give a shout-out to my favorite teen/tween linky! I wish there were more of us to join the fun and bond. 🙂
Jo - Mother of Teenagers says
Thanks for the shout out Katy it is always great to hear such lovely feedback. Blue Lagoon! Nicky beat me to it ! What a film. I love a bit of Brooke Shields – I would also have to add Elle MacPherson for her tween and teen stories and midlife ones on being so amazing looking at 53! Thanks for joining us Katy. #TweensTeensBeyond

Ooo, Elle McPherson would be a good one. And she looks good because of genetics pure and simple. If there was something we could do to look like her, then we’d all do it!

Great topic, Katy! I love it. Can’t help but wonder if you purposely left out Angelina? I absolutely adore Goldie Hawn and would love to read her blog. Did you know she moved here for the last few years of her son’s high school for his hockey? Might be an option for you! Just sayin’ …

I didn’t even think of Angelina. Don’t know why. Well, I guess she doesn’t seem relatable to me. All those far off countries when I can barely make it to Canada.

Don’t all celebrity mothers have nannies to look after their kids, do the shopping, carry out a spot of cleaning and have sex with their husbands? ? #TweensTeensBeyond

Ha ha ha! So maybe the nannies should blog? I think those blogs would be very readable!!

My daughter is now a tween (12) and I think that parents need help now that they have tweens and teens more if not more so than when they were little! There are tons of blogs out there for first time moms with babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, but us moms of older kids need help too! I would love to hear about how parents navigate issues such as puberty, buying that first bra, relationships with friends and frenemies, exposure to Internet porn, the oversexualization of girls, the constant pressures to succeed and be everything to everyone….these are all things that us moms of older kids face and we would love to know we are not alone. I hate that there is indeed a death of voices representing this stage of parenting. Don’t further isolate us by just stopping to write about it.
