Are You Smarter than a 5-Year-Old?

January 30, 2012 By Katy 2 Comments

Yes, that sort of looks like a dunce hat on my head!

I have shared that I went to a high-falutin’ university and even got an international scholarship for graduate study.

But motherhood doesn’t care how smart you are.

And neither do your kids.

Sydney turned 5 in December. I think that she is ready for MIT or at least kindergarten with some of the things that have been coming out of her mouth lately.

Example #1
Will, age 8, had a hockey tournament over the winter break. It was a jamboree! Which means all the parents are jammed together all day watching 8-year-olds play endless mini-hockey games. Little sister Sydney was forced to attend. She enjoyed herself for about 15 minutes but had to stay about 180 minutes. (Lucky me!)

A couple days after the jamboree, her Dad and I announced we were all going to a professional hockey game. What fun! How exciting! Front row seats from Santa!

Sydney was irritated. “I don’t want to go.”

“But it’s big guy hockey,” I assured her.

“I will only go if it’s REAL hockey, not Will’s hockey,” she announced.

Good news–she enjoyed herself for about 20 minutes at the REAL hockey game. A whole 5 minutes more than she did watching the FAKE hockey her brother plays!

Example #2

My family watched the Rose Bowl parade on January 2. I waxed nostalgic for a moment.

“Kids,” I said. “Did you know that Grandpa met Grandma at the Rose Bowl? The Rose Bowl that the parade right there on TV is named after? It was 1964. Actually, 1965. Isn’t that neat?”

Sydney looked at me. I swear her eyebrows lifted. “How do YOU know?” she asked.

Well, right, I wasn’t there.

Er, I just heard about it later.

Okay. I’ll be quiet.

How do your kids make you feel dumb?!

I will never forget the conversation I had with my then 5 year old daughter. We were in the car and she was sitting on my lap, (didn't need seat belts then) and I said to her "Micah, you have a boney butt!" She replied…"your supposed to have bones in your butt, otherwise your but would be all jiggly!" As I get older and notice my butt growing…I think my bones have disappeared. 🙂

5-year-olds are so smart! 🙂 If someone comments on my butt, I think I'm going to start telling them, "It's not big, I'm just big-butt-boned!"
