Checklist for a Midwest Halloween Costume

October 13, 2015 By Katy 6 Comments

I have lived in the Midwest longer than anywhere else and I’ve lived in a lot of places: California, Maryland, Arizona, North Carolina and British Columbia. Heck, I even studied abroad in Sydney, Australia.

I’ve learned a lot in my years in the Midwest:

  • I know what bratwurst is.
  • I know that winter lasts six months.
  • I know how to drive in the snow.
  • I know that there are different hunting seasons for deer depending on whether you are hunting with a bow and arrow or a regular firearm.

I’ve also learned that while you may possibly have mild weather on Halloween night, the chances are far greater that your kids will be trick-or-treating in cold, rainy weather with a chance of a sleet, hail, or snow.

Thus, it is imperative that your kids’ Halloween costumes in the Midwest meet the following requirements. Indeed, what works during the day at the class party in the nice, cozy school room has to transition to withstand the fickle Midwest elements between 6-8pm!Here's a funny checklist for a Midwest Halloween Costume for kids!

Here’s the checklist for a Midwest Halloween Costume:

  1. Must be waterproof.
  2. Must look good with snow boots.
  3. Must look good with mittens or gloves.
  4. Must look good with a winter hat.
  5. Must look good with a winter jacket.
  6. Must NOT have any camouflage as it’s deer season and you never know.

If you live in the Midwest, do you agree? If you don’t, what’s the weather like where your kids trick-or-treat?

Come back in six months when I’ll share tips for a Midwest Easter Egg hunt in the snow! The joy of living in the Midwest - Easter egg hunts in the snow!

You know, your tips – with the exception of the deer number – could equally apply here in BC. That damp gets in pretty darn quick and if you’re not prepped with proper boots, a hat and a decent pair of gloves you’ll be zipping back home to get them. May I also add that the trick or treat bag is equally important. Yes, size is important. Don’t go for the cute, weensy plastic pumpkin. Too small. Don’t go for anything made of paper. It’ll tear. Our loot bag of choice? Festive fabric bags given to my kids by my sister, Failing that? Pillowcases. Hands down.

Those weensy plastic pumpkins are only acceptable for babies. I agree about pillow cases! I think last year, though, it was so full that one of my darlings dragged the case behind them, the damp soaked through the case, and we lost a few fun size bars to the wet. HORRORS!

Haha, that Easter egg hunt picture is just too awesome! It screams a wonderfully sunny springtime!! We lived in Montana before we moved to our sunny desert and these same rules apply there. Boots, waterproof snow suits and more are a must!

LOL, it’s like we’re worlds away!! It’s a heat wave here in California (was close to 100 degrees two days ago!) and my checklist is pretty much, “Be as close to nude as you can without looking like a Hot Topic teen”.. haha… 😉 – http://www.domesticgeekgirl.com

Ha ha! I grew up near LA. I’m sure nudity IS some people’s costume in So Cal. 🙂

We get similar weather here in Virginia! Easter and Halloween are always a toss up. You never know what kind of Easter dress to buy or costume add-ons you might need!
