Christmas Movies That Aren’t Really Christmas Movies

December 17, 2018 By Katy 4 Comments

It’s time to talk about my favorite Christmas movies that aren’t really Christmas movies.

What do I mean by that? Well, there are movies like Home Alone and A Christmas Story that are unabashedly about Christmas. Just like every movie on the Hallmark Channel from, oh, July to December 31.

And then there are movies that aren’t about Christmas or the holidays per se, but are set during the most joyous time of year. So if you have reached your saturation point with Hallmark Channel movies, or you are just in the mood for something less blatantly holly and jolly, check out these Christmas movies that aren’t really Christmas movies.Enjoy these Christmas movies that aren't really Christmas movies!

Die Hard

Remember Bruce WIllis shooting up the bad guys who took his wife hostage at the company Christmas party in 1988? The movie rocketed the actor to fame and showed how out of control an office party can get. Hint: this is one “Christmas” movie that men will agree to watch with you!

Just Friends

In this comedy, Ryan Reynolds plays a high school misfit who returns to his hometown years later as big-time Hollywood music mogul. He reunites with his high school crush/former best friend. Will he find love or disappointment in his Christmas stocking?

This comedy also stars Anna Faris as an over-the-top Britney Spears wannabe.

Trading Places

This is NOT an appropriate movie for the kiddos, but it is funny. Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd play opposites who team up, along with hooker-with-a-heart Jamie Lee Curtis, to bring down two callous stock investors.

I randomly laugh any time of year just by picturing a drunk Dan Aykroyd dressed as Santa snacking on salmon he stole from a buffet.

Serendipity

This is one of my favorite rom-coms starring Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack. The movie starts and ends at Christmas time, after a series of life events lead the would-be-couple astray in New York City until destiny brings them together again.

While You Were Sleeping

This classic romantic comedy stars Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman. Set in Chicago at Christmas, it tells the story of Lucy, a lonely toll collector who falls for a high-falutin businessman. He gets mugged, but  Lucy saves him and is then mistaken for his fiance at the hospital. But while he is in a coma, Lucy falls for his brother. It is sweeter than it sounds!

These are my favorite Christmas movies that aren’t really Christmas movies. Did I miss any of your favorites?

I love While You Were Sleeping especially for the fact that it redeems Bill Pullman from his unfortunate role in my other classic fave nonChristmas flick: Sleepless in Seattle. Speaking of Tom and Meg, I haven’t seen You’ve Got Mail for awhile but I betcha it’d make for fine viewing this time of year, too.

We have the same excellent taste, Kelly. I was debating about whether or not to put Sleepless in Seattle on my Christmas-not-really Christmas list. If it amped up the Valentine’s Day angle just a wee bit more, it would be the perfect Valentine’s Day flick for sure.

Trading Places is one of those hilarious movies that they just don’t make anymore. Great list! #happynow

Just the other day my husband said, “Die Hard is the best Christmas movie!”
