Spooky season is upon us!
I just learned this year that all the cools kids are calling it “Spooky Season” instead of Halloween, October, or Fall.
What better way to celebrate my newfound Halloween wisdom than with a roundup of my favorite spooky season posts from years past? I’ve got it all covered—scary movies, costumes, trick-or-treating adventures, and plenty of Halloween laughs.
Scary Movies, Scared Mom
First up, let’s talk about horror movies. I for one am glad that I don’t have to watch any scary movies this year.
Yup, my horror movie lovin’ daughter is off at college, so I don’t have to be her wingman watching Halloween XXIV this year.
When she first expressed her love for all things scary, she was just a wee tot. I thought maybe something was wrong with her.
But as she grew up, I learned that kids like watching scary movies because they are a safe place to be scared. And, those movies end after ~90 minutes, usually with good winning over evil. In other words, scary movies guarantee an end to the scariness, plus a good resolution.
I wrote about watching scary movies for her in this essay for Business Insider.

Halloween Costume Highlights
My family has a long history of costume craziness.
My husband, who has a costume party at work every year, always 1) complains about finding a costume and 2) waits until the last minute, which results in him being unable to find a costume. This generates more complaining about finding a costume.
Luckily, the man adores flannel shirts and there are plenty of costumes you can make using just that one article of clothing. He’s the inspiration behind this post, Easy Halloween Costumes for Men Featuring a Flannel Shirt.
I also survived years when my son dressed like death itself. Forget superheroes or sports figures, he was going for scary and grim.
Then there’s my darling daughter. There was the Halloween (10+ years ago now–how did that happen?!) when she and 72 million other kids dressed like Elsa from Frozen. That year was crazy, both with the number of Elsas trotting through the neighborhood, and because of the number of times I endured watching that flick. Let it go, indeed. It inspired this list of 10 things to say to the trick-or-treaters dressed like Elsa which may still be useful should a Frozen princess show up at your doorstep this year.
Trick-or-Treat Adventures
Every year I remember the Halloween when my son got a can of Bush’s Black Beans while trick-or-treating.
And every year it makes me laugh and laugh!

Halloween Laughs
If your kids are laughing themselves silly every time they hear “six seven”, then check out this post chock full of Halloween jokes.
Here’s an example:
What does a skeleton order at a restaurant?
Spareribs!
Yup, you’ll have all the kids in the neighborhood laughing at your candy-corny jokes in no time.
If not, then just keep saying “six seven“.
Happy Halloween, happy Spooky Season, or just have a happy day, dear readers!
