The Funny Truth about Making Dinner for Your Kids

September 18, 2017 By Katy 17 Comments

“If you can’t make it better, you can laugh at it,” said the iconic Erma Bombeck.

Was she talking about dinnertime with kids? Who knows.

But her advice is certainly applicable to the nightly chore that — let’s face it — usually falls on moms because we are the ones who get stuff done.

So when your kids complain night after night about what you made for dinner, you can laugh at it.

And when they eat only part of what you made while picking out the bits of onion, you can laugh at it.

Or when they make artful creations on their plate to hide what they aren’t eating, you can laugh at it.

To help you laugh at making dinner for your kids I present these dinnertime memes. All memes are originals by little ol’ me, but I think they strike a universal chord with moms everywhere.

The one about someone else"Someone else make dinner" is the battle cry of all moms every night. It's a shining example of the funny truth about making dinner for your kids.

The one about what’s for dinner

"What's for dinner?" your kids ask. "Nothing you'll like" replies every mom who's ever tried to make dinner for her kids. It's just another shining example of the funny truth about making dinner for your kids.

The one about that smell"Ugh! What's that smell?" ask your precious children. "Dinner" you reply as they start making gagging noises. Yup, it's just another funny truth about making dinner for your kids.

The one about using the crockpot

Anyone else throw bratwurst and kraut in the slow cooker and forget about it until you are greeted by THAT smell upon walking in the house at the end of the day?

I yi yi. Don't you just love walking into your house after a long day of work and school only to smell 8 hours of sauerkraut simmering in the crockpot? That smell is just another funny truth about making dinner for your kids.

So the next time you’re making dinner for your kids, and they complain, whine, play with their food and/or refuse to eat, may these memes bring you a moment of joy.

And some solidarity, Moms, that you are not alone!

“What’s for dinner?” “Nothing You’ll Like.” Oh how very, very true. And you really do just have to laugh. It truly helps.

I’m reminded though of how very seriously I took the whole dinner thing by watching my niece with her toddlers. She’s just like I was, fussing over why he won’t eat cheese when he loved it last week and why she gobbles up broccoli but refuses to try broccoli soup. Thank heavens we aren’t all soldiering through this alone. Thanks for the reminder, Katy.

Did your guys like tonight’s dinner? My son’s away and my daughter’s out, so I’m good.

I’m entering a whole new dinner world. Because my picky, bird-like-eating son is suddenly ravenous. And eating everything. So what I’m used to cooking no longer offers enough servings. The only positive is that I’m middle age now so I should be eating less. 🙂

Oh my, that IS an odd comment! Civilized and polite, yet like a dagger through the heart at the same time, LOL. 🙂

Great MEMES! I try so desperately not to comment when my teens push their food around, try and hide it under something else or just openly leave it in a pile. I’m like, “But you ate that when you were a toddler!” or “It’s only parsnip! Parsnips are so sweet – what’s wrong with you?” or “What do you mean you ate salsa at school in a wrap?? You won’t touch the bloody stuff at home!” You get the drift… #TweensTeensBeyond

LOL, I’m dying: “What do you mean you ate salsa at school in a wrap?? You won’t touch the bloody stuff at home!”

      So true!!!

Sometimes I wonder why I try and make anything else other than mac and cheese?! Oh right, because I enjoy eating real food!

Yesterday a coworker was doctoring up her beans and rice with spices and a bag of shredded cheese because she had made it without spices so her kids would eat it. They didn’t eat it (of course) and she was now trying to make her bland, boring rice and beans better.

      The struggle is real!

Haha I love this! Apparently my teen’s hearts sink if they walk in the door and can smell that it’s stew. I’ve started trying to call stew by various different names but with little success! Thanks so much for joining us at #TweensTeensBeyond

Yes “nothing you will like” is one I have used frequently in the past along with “something you will complain about”. I am sure I used to love cooking before I had teens, now it is the one part of the day I dread on a regular basis. A friend was surprised when I told her this recently and said “but you are so good at it” and I replied “I thought so too but not anymore”. Glad to know it is the same the world over. #TweensTeensBeyond

We go over what’s for dinner 3,575 times a day! Or at least it feels that way. Sometimes I reply with what we’re eating and sometimes I say food, which is followed up with “what kind of food”, which receives “the kind you eat”. Do you have that meme in the works?
Thanks for sharing with us at #MMBH!

Nevermind the kraut, I always think the cat must’ve poo’d when I come home to slow cooked pulled pork! I feel your pain. Thankfully my better half loves cooking 😉 #tweensteensbeyond

I guess it’s a good thing I never remember to put anything in my crockpot, then…
