The Shocking Truth about Why My Kids are Redheads

June 24, 2015 By Katy 15 Comments

They look at me.

They look at my husband.

They look at my kids.

They look at me again.

Then they look at my husband again.

I know what they are thinking before they even ask it. They are about to pose the question I get asked at least once a month.

“Where do your kids get their red hair from?”

Where my kids get their red hair from...the shocking truth! As a blonde woman married to a brunette man, I am asked this question over and over again.

I could bore you with the facts. There is a random great grandma on my mother’s side from Scotland who had red hair, I’m told. And, my husband grows .01% red hair and 99.99% brown hair when he grows a beard. Genetically speaking, there is a logical explanation found on MyRedHairGene.com.

But really? Who knows where they get their red hair from!

The Shocking Truth about Why My Kids are Red HeadsActually, I DO know the shocking truth about where my kids get their red hair from. I’m sharing it with you, in strictest confidence.

My kids get their red hair from:

Ronald McDonald
Ronald McDonald in Thailand

Danny Bonaduce from the Partridge Family
Dannybonaduce2007

Prince Harry
Prince Harry 2014

Thomas Jefferson
Do my kids get their red hair from Thomas Jefferson?!?

What about you, dear readers? What question are you asked time and again? Or, who is your favorite celebrity redhead? Personally I love those funny redheads Carol Burnett and Lucille Ball.

That very question! Yes, my son is a redhead. Especially at the end of the summer and especially when he was younger. He’s not got the fiery red of Ronald McD but more of the coppery highlights like Prince Harry. And where does he get it from? “Both grandmothers had cousins with red hair.”

Can I say that I’m pleased my son has more Prince Harry than Ronald colored hair, too? It gets darker as he gets older as well.

Meanwhile my daughter was blonde and then slowly turned strawberry blonde. I’m still surprised people consider her a redhead. She’s got lots of blonde, brown and a bit of red in there, lucky girl.

I am constantly asked how tall I am. And my kids are constantly asked how old they are (because they are short). People don’t seem to understand how having a short mother MIGHT make the children a little on the small size. Hello!?!?!

Ha ha!! And I get the same thing being tall. People always look at my kids and ask, “How’d they get so tall?” Then they look at me, standing nearly 6′ tall, or my husband, who’s 6’2″. If the lightbulb doesn’t go off in their heads, I don’t know how I can help them!!

I was the red headed child to the blonde haired mother and brown haired father. And I hated my hair growing up. Then I started having kids and the red locks began changing to brown with red highlights and now I dye it red, lol. None of my kids are red heads. They have the red highlights, but no true red heads out of 4 kids. So the question I always get asked is where do they get their blue eyes. I’m kind of like hello you’re looking at me. Now granted two of my kids have a deeper blue like their father and two of them have more of the blue/green like me, but it’s like really? Are you people trying to say these kids don’t belong to me and my husband? I really don’t understand the need to ask that question about where the kids got something. Especially from strangers. Yes, these kids really belong to the milk man ;).

Now you dye it, lol! My daughter started blonde and is really a strawberry blonde now at age 8. I’m still taken aback when people ask me about her red hair because it looks brown some days, blonde other days, strawberry blonde most days, but not really red, you know? I think I get asked about their hair in situations with new people I don’t know and they are just making conversation. I can only imagine what adoptive parents must hear!!

I’m a red head and I’m frequently asked if its natural/what number is it? My mother gave frequent responses like the milkman or the postman. That was awkward.

There really aren’t milkmen anymore so even if folks have joked about that around my kids, they have no clue what they are suggesting (thankfully!).

My friend (who isn’t a redhead, and her husband and other kids aren’t redheads, either) just had a baby with the brightest red hair you’ve ever seen! She says some of the cousins have it, so those genes must be floating around somewhere.

Yes, it was a surprise for us, too! Even more so when my blonde baby daughter turned strawberry blonde when she was a toddler. Who saw that one coming?! Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

My mom and grandma have red hair. My youngest was born with red hair, but now it’s blonde. Go figure! The question I always get asked is how my son, who is only 10, is 5′ 2″ already, when his parents are so short. I don’t know the answer, because no one in our family is particularly tall. They even tested him to make sure he didn’t have a health issue that was making him grow too fast. But he’s normal, just big for his age.

It’s crazy what people ask all for the sake of making light conversation! Thanks for dropping by.
