Watch What We’re Watching This Summer

June 25, 2018 By Katy 2 Comments

My daughter, 11, and I look forward to America’s Got Talent every Tuesday night.

There are trained cats this year, folks. What more could you want?

There are also the usual plethora of singers, dancers, magicians, and weirdos.

We like AGT because there is always something new, entertaining, and it’s light. What I mean by that is you can go scoop your cat’s litter box and come back and you really haven’t missed anything.

It got me thinking about what else my kids and I are watching this summer. Perhaps you are watching these, too, or need our esteemed recommendation for something new to check out.

What We’re Watching: Cobra Kai

Cobra Kai on YouTube Red is the continuation of The Karate Kid movie 34 years later. That’s right, the show picks up decades after Daniel beat Johnny in the All-Valley Karate finals.

My inner 80s child loves it as it is rife with Gen X references and phrases. What We're Watching - Cobra Kai

Kudos to the writers for making it such an interesting story. My daughter and I are actually sympathetic towards Johnny, the bully. The series is really well done, not like most reboots or revivals.

What We’re Watching: The Greatest Showman

My daughter and I missed this movie in theaters last Christmas, but watched it on digital when it was released in April. And then we’ve watched it again and again. It’s awesome!

It IS a musical, so there’s lots of singing. But the songs are catchy, the story is entertaining, and it’s got a terrific cast including Michelle Williams and Hugh Jackman (swoon).

I promise you’ll be singing the songs for weeks after watching this one. And while it’s a movie about the circus, there are no clowns, just in case you are scared of those.

What We’re Watching: Expedition Unknown

This one is my fourteen-year-old son’s favorite. We follow Josh Gates every Tuesday at 10 on Discovery as he “investigates iconic unsolved events, lost cities, buried treasures and other puzzling stories” around the globe. What we're watching - Expedition Unknown

Josh is personable and funny and has an archaeology degree. We always learn something from Expedition Unknown, whether he’s looking for Bigfoot, hunting for pirate gold, or discovering ancient cities buried in the jungle.

Don’t worry, we are also going for walks, swimming, sleeping, learning how to drive (the 14-year-old–yikes!), and limiting our screen time this summer. Ahem.

What are you watching that you recommend?

Well now we will very soon be watching what you all are watching!

Except for Greatest Showman, because we had to take a GS imposed break around here or mama who loved the movie might have lost her mind if she had to listen to This is Me or any of the other songs for the millionth time…..

Jen, you made me laugh with your comments about GS! I can very well see how it is easy to reach that saturation point and then enough is enough. 🙂

By the way, I know you have some kids younger than mine so there is some language in Cobra Kai. No f-word, thankfully, or s-word that I recall, but a few words that did make me surprised.
