When Kids Name Pets

My boss has a cat named Papagena. I always thought that was a bit unusual. Plus, I always mixed it up with Patagonia, the clothing company.

As my boss and I were chatting the other day, I learned two things about Papagena. First, the name is from a character in the opera The Magic Flute. Second, my boss’ teenage daughter picked the name Papagena.

Which got me thinking.

I’m not sure my kids would ever pick a name from an opera, probably because my kids have never been to the opera! But they do watch TV. Thus, they have a different cultural reference for picking cat names.

First, here’s what the cat would be named if my 9-year-old could choose:

Spongebob

Patrick

Sandy

Squidward

Mr. Krabs

Second, here’s what the cat would be named if my 6-year-old could choose:

Fred

Daphne

Velma

Shaggy

Scooby

Do you have a great pet name? Why did you pick it?

My two-year old named his teddy bear “Nofin’ da bear” as in “nothing the bear.” Not sure where he got it from, but I think he didn’t want to name it and then that name stuck!! Our other stuffed animals are creatively named thus: a tiger named “Baby Tiger,” two giraffes named “Giraffe” and “Baby Giraffe,” and a duck named…”Ducky.” They are really stretching their imaginations, huh?!

Aw, say hi to Nofin da bear! That one’s a keeper. We, too, have “Lionies” and “Ellie the Elephants” around.

Haha! My kids named our dog “Shemly” after my childhood dogs “Shem” and “Emily” who they actually knew! (They were pretty old by then) We got Shemly shortly after Shem and Emily died and she was a remarkable mix of the two in appearance. I thought it was pretty sweet.

That’s a sweet story. I love it when animal names (and people names!) have a story.

Ha! That reminds me that in the 80s my sister named our gray kitten “Nermal” as in Nermal, Garfield’s little cousin/neice. Every time we took that cat to the vet they called it “Normal”!
