With Sympathy for Newtown

December 16, 2012 By Katy 9 Comments

About two weeks after 9/11/01, my husband and I went to see a silly movie. It was much needed comic relief after the non-stop sorrow on TV. Like then, eventually I will return to jokes as relief from the events of this past week. But for now I am still so sad.

When I heard the terrible news, I cried.

When I heard the even worse news that it was 6-year-olds, I completely lost it.

I have a 6-year-old.

And there are so many things that I have shared with those moms in Newtown.

Those moms were pregnant when I was pregnant.

Those moms brought home a baby when I brought home my baby.

Those moms watched them take their first steps while I watched my baby take hers.

Those moms attended a pre-kindergarten graduation like I did.

Those moms took pictures of their babies on the first day of school this fall like I did.

Those moms and I calculated the year our kindergarteners would graduate from high school: 2025. So. Far. Away.

Those moms wrapped Christmas gifts and hid them in the basement like me.

Those moms kissed their kids goodbye and sent them to school.

Those moms were me.

And now they aren’t.

And I’m so sorry.

So very, very sorry.

My deepest condolences. My strongest prayers. For Newtown, for all of us.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. -Matthew 5:4

I kept holding her hand this weekend thinking “This is what a 6-year-old feels like.” I’m so blessed to be able to even do something so small as hold her hand.

so sweet. And yes, so many of us relate. Such a precious age to lose your life. It’s so horrible, and I don’t know how we can prevent it from happening again!!

I have a six year old too. It hits me whenever I look at him what those parents lost. Six is such a special age….still little enough to cuddle, and believe in Santa, yet big enough to really be their own little person. I am so sad for those families.

I know, I’m just so sad because I know what a six-year-old is like every day. She sat on my lap this afternoon and cuddled, and I thought of what I had, and what those Newtown parents were missing.

I looked at the pictures of all those children lost, and they all reminded me of my oldest son. I think of how they all have wrapped gifts under their Xmas trees, and their parents are now planning their funerals. It makes me angry, sad, sick, whatever all at the same time.

Well written post. I haven’t posted about Newtown…I just don’t have anything to add to the conversation, you know? It’s tragic. I have thought of the families and especially today being Christmas. Next year will probably be even worse because the shock will have worn off, but all the public support will mostly be gone, and the families are still there, still celebrating a Christmas without their child.
