I’m here to tell you something amazing, my dear readers, especially those who midlife and/or moms.
Wide legs pants are your new best friend.
Oh you haven’t heard the news?
Let me tell you why wide leg pants rock.
On trend
First, they are gently fashion-forward. I say gently because I’m not encouraging you to sport a crop top with your wide leg jeans a la teenage girls. That would be super fashion-forward and a mistake, at least for me who would be putting her love handles on display for all to see.
But wide leg pants are trendy and wearing a pair can make you feel a little fashionable.
So comfy
Second, wide leg pants are comfortable. They sit at your natural high waist rather than those midrise pants that always seemed to slice painfully through my muffin top.
Hide ‘n seek
Next, they cover a multitude of sins.
- You can tuck your muffin top in your wide leg pants.
- They also hide cellulite. Do I have some? Probably, BUT YOU CAN’T SEE IT.
- Varicose veins? Somewhere under those wide legs, yes.
- I think I’m keeping a print out of my master’s thesis somewhere near my right thigh.
Remember when
Fourth, this style of pants is nostalgic. Think back to the 90s, when wide leg high-waisted pants were all the rage. The 90s weren’t necessarily the best time of my life, but hey, I was younger and skinnier then. So who can blame me for looking at wide leg pants nowadays and thinking they make me look like (wait for it) younger and skinnier.
We deserve this!
Finally, we DESERVE wide leg pants. After all, we survived the Britney Spears years. Remember when we were happily wearing our wide leg high-waisted pants in the early 90s and then Brit flounced onto the scene with her low rise pants, showcasing that area of skin below her navel and her hoo-ha?
I may have managed a low-rise pant for a few years but as time marched on the only thing I was managing was a whole lot of muffin top above those low-rise pants.
But did the Fashion Gods give us a reprieve when the low-rise phase started to wan?
NO. THEY DID NOT.
Suddenly I was squishing my muffin top into mid-rise SKINNY JEANS. Sure, I was able to distract from my muddling middle with some voluminous infinity scarves for a bit, but nothing hid my thunder thighs in the veritable hell that was skinny jeans.
My legs looked like enormous chicken drumsticks.
Until now.
All hail the rise of the high waisted wide leg pant!
So if you haven’t jumped on the trend and joined the masses of women hiding their masses in their wide leg pants, what are you waiting for?
We’ve got about 5-6 years before the next style takes over and it may not be as forgiving, flattering and comfy as wide leg pants, your new best friend.

Yes! I like wide leg as they suit all heights, too. Bring ’em on.
Katy says
I hope this trend sticks around longer than skinny jeans!
