The Honest Truth about Naming Kittens

November 5, 2018 By Katy 5 Comments

The word is out: there are two new kittens in our house.

Woo hoo! They are so fun–and mischievous.

The kittens are sisters, a calico and a torbie, and we got them in early October.

We named them Buffy and Trixie. Cute, no? Or perhaps you think they sound a bit like a pair of hookers. We don’t really care what other people think, we like their names.

But if was quite the process for our family of four to agree on their names. Here’s the honest truth about naming kittens.Naming kittens? Here's the honest and funny truth about how our family decided on our new cats' names.

Buffy

Buffy got her name because she’s got some buff color to her and Buffy sounds cute. The end. Easy peasy.

Trixie

Trixie took a bit more time. Originally, we thought Trixie would be named S’mores. However, the name did not sound perfect when combined with Buffy.

Case in point: “Come here, Buffy and S’mores!”

Nope.

“Come here, Buffy and Trixie!” sounds better.

So how did she become Trixie? Well, she has all the colors of Halloween. So it’s Trixie, like trick or treat. Here's the honest truth about naming kittens.

But before we settled on Buffy and Trixie, my family had a lot of fun discussing famous female duos and all the potential kitten names they inspired.

Great Female Duos

There were TV duos like:

  • Cagney and Lacey
  • Laverne and Shirley
  • Lucy and Ethel

Disney-inspired duos like:

    • Minnie and Daisy
    • Elsa and Anna

There were great sisters we could name them after, too:

  • Jo, Beth, Meg and Amy from Little Women
  • Winnie, Mary, and Sarah Sanderson from Hocus Pocus
  • Mary Kate and Ashley from Full House
  • Kim, Khloe, Kourtney, Kendall and Kylie Kardashian (Ok, maybe not…)

Great female musical duos inspired us, too:

  • Salt ‘n Peppa
  • Naomi and Wynonna
  • Elphie and Glinda from Wicked (“NO!” said the men in our household. Very adamantly, I might add.)

Hockey Duos

My husband also originally said that we could only get two kittens vs. one if we named them after hockey players. Ice hockey is very big in our house, after all. He suggested Probie and Domi after Bob Probert and Tie Domi.

Um, no.

So I wanted to name them Monique and Jocelyn after the Lamoureux twins from the U.S.A. who won the gold medal in ice hockey this year (sorry, not sorry, Canada).

But, in the end, we all agreed on Buffy and Trixie. And so begins a new chapter in our family with these girls.

So there you have it. The honest truth about naming kittens. Do you have pets? How did you decide what to name them?

My daughter was enamored of the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” series when we got our first two female cats. Thus, we had, “Buffy” a tortie, and “Angel” a calico. Later, we had a stray choose us..a male we named Spike. Then another stray showed up, another male, we named “Xander”…

That’s awesome! A whole theme going there. While I didn’t really watch the show, I looked it up when the kids wanted “Buffy” and I tried hard to get “Willow” the best friend in the mix for our kitten who eventually became Trixie. I thought Willow was a cool name.

Well, now surely if you’d adopted two boys you’d have called them Daniel and Hendrik after the Sedins. I mean can’t you just hear the sweet little “Danny , Henry, come!” How cute is that? As for that sweet little reference to Olympics Hockey, well, yes, you have the title. For now. I won’t say a peep about Tessa and Scott … Not a peep.

And yes, Willow is also very cool.

Danny and Henry would be cute, especially since both kitties have a bit of ginger to ’em, too!
